Confessional and raw is Keys Single Review : Alicia Keys: ‘In Common’

Alicia Keys is back and looking better than ever, with over a decade in the music business, some artist show clear signs of fatigue but not Mrs Keys, she oozes an aura of peace and love in her new track ‘In Common’. Some may have thought she was done but Alicia shows her purity on the soulful house inspired number. Appearing on the scene around the same time as the Queen of Pop ‘Beyonce’ the comparisons were always going to be made. You could argue that Alicia has not shown the same willingness to re-invent herself like Mrs Carter. The music produced by Alicia Keys has always touched most hearts and minds though.

Confessional and raw is Keys as the hook kicks in “We got way too much in common if I’m being honest with you, who wants to love somebody like me? You want to love somebody like me, you must be messed up too”. It’s a stark portrait of the difficulties faced in long term relationships when someone is damaged but the other is still willing to love. The beauty of this song is that it’s told in such an upbeat form, produced by ILLANGELO, Grammy Award-winning Canadian producer, songwriter, musician and mixing engineer from Calgary, Alberta. When you add the performance dance art celebrated in the video by an array of the LGBT community it takes the track to new levels of feeling which is rarely reached. I must mention again how beautiful this video is as it’s the perfect illustration of all love, all life and equality we all deserve.

Some critics may point to the fact that Alicia Keys has abandoned her piano ballad style and moved to chart safe flavour. The 90’s are done so this a move that has to be made. Alicia to her credit retains that wonderful drive that ensures that a new generation of fans will be captured by the spirit she evokes when she sings. Most of Alicia’s fans from back in the day will appreciate and respect that she’s willing to take a plunge in this modern market. It perhaps would have been easier for her to just tour with her old stuff.

Alicia Keys has a more than notable album track record and told us what ‘A Woman’s Worth in 2001’ then she was an ‘A Girl on Fire in 2011’. From this sizzling single ‘In Common’ I feel that 2016 Alicia Keys will bring some much needed soul back to the charts.
