Finally, after a five year hiatus, The Kills are back with ‘Ash & Ice.’ Their opening song ‘Doing It To Death’ makes a bold statement that they are back for good and that nothing will stop them (Jamie Hince’s hands surgery as well as his pending divorce from Kate Moss).
The track sets the tone for the rest of the album: grungy light, raw, deep vocals, all with raging guitar riffs. As the album progresses it is not necessarily a brand new style, but rather a perfection of the style that we have come to love. A pronounced electronic influence has been a change since ‘Blood Pressures’, but has only complemented their blues laced grungy rock.
‘Ash & Ice’ overall has been less aggressive than previous albums and it works for the band like in ‘Hum For Your Buzz’ as a stripped down, intimate version we haven’t been accustomed to. They take it one more step in ‘That Love’ with a piano ballad that is used to emphasize Mosshart’s vocals and gives off the feeling of being played off an old record player.
Love becomes the central theme of the album and Hince goes on to say, “The correlation between addiction and love is often found in my songs. It’s amazing that someone could subdue you so that you are blinded.” “On Days of Here and Now, it is to accept the lack of control”, says Mosshart. The surly guitars of ‘Ash & Ice’ embody that sound very New York, previously defined by Blondie and The Ramones, later renewed by The Strokes and Interpol .
