We caught up with Chela for a quick 1 on 1
Whether it’s showing you how to properly get down to one of her mixes or propelling you into a state of pure nu-pop bliss, Chela has truly cemented herself as an emerging talent to watch within the alt-electro scene.
Originally hailing from Melbourne, Australia as Chelsea May Wheatley, it hasn’t taken long for Chela to prove her stellar production capabilities from her debut 2012 single, “Plastic Gun” to her more recent standout singles ‘Romanticise’ and ‘Zero’, released through acclaimed cult label, Kitsune. Quickly gaining momentum for her lush vocal abilities, Chela rose to the attention of blogs and music media across the globe, as the voice to the Goldroom hit ‘Fifteen’, Viceroy’s ‘Dream Of Bombay’, and hometown friends Clubfeet’s single ‘Heartbreak’.

2.You have been described as; Australia’s finest new 2015 alt-electro export’ – would you agree with this?
There are so many fine exports to come from Oz! I wouldn’t say that one is better than the other, but I’m very flattered for the compliment.
- If you could work with any Singer/Producer or band in the industry currently who would it be and why?
I’d love to work with Dev Hynes. I’ve met and worked with so many writers/producers and I find it hard to feel like we’re absolutely on the same page, no matter how many chops or stats they’ve produced. I think Dev and I would share a good understanding.

- Who did you grow up listening to and who are you listening to right now/?
My parents loved mostly 80’s pop music, Pressure Down by John Farnham was one of the greatest songs that my Dad ever brought into my world. After that era my sister Nicole and I got deep into 90’s pop through our tweens, Mariah Carey and JLO etc. After I turned 15 I mostly listened to punk and indie rock such as The Hives and The Strokes, and now I listen to it all as well as anything modern that I love!
- Pick two Celebrities to be your parents – Who?
Wow, I’m racking my brain to think of any celebrities who seem to be well rounded individuals, LOL. Perhaps on-screen Jerry and Elaine!
- Rate yourself(s) on a scale of 1-10?
You know when someone says ‘that person rates themselves’ and it’s a massive diss?
- What’s your favourite movie of all time?
No faves, but I do love Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, Coen Bros & Wes Anderson films.
- If Hollywood made a movie about your life who would you like to see play the lead role as you?
It would be awesome if it was a sh*tty B grade musical film with that Filipino babe Vanessa Hudgens playing me.
- If you could trade places with another person for a week- famous or non famous/living or dead / real or fictional who would it be?
Peter Pan, man!
- Melbourne or London?
Melbourne is home, so Melbourne. The only time I have spent in London was cold and grey.
- Longest time you’ve gone without- A shower/brushing your teeth/ any gigs/events planned for this / next year
I can’t remember, maybe camping festivals for the showering! But I have a pretty deluxe toiletries bag with a plethora of luxury products to make it all ok.
- Finally any gigs/events planned for this / next year?
White Night in Melbourne on the 21st of Feb. Currently writing and recording my debut EP, for release later this year!
